A London-based startup has collected $12.3 million to build a social network with no algorithms, no advertising, and no public content — essentially reconstructing the part of the internet that existed before the internet became profitable.

What happened
Yope secured a $12.3 million seed round led by Northzone to build what it calls an "AI-native" private social platform organized around micro communities — small, closed groups of real-world friends sharing photos, videos, and messages.
There is no algorithmic feed. Accounts are private by default. Revenue comes from subscriptions rather than advertising, which is either a principled stance or a business model that TikTok tried once and then reconsidered.
To understand the opportunity, Yope's team conducted over 100,000 interviews, assisted by AI tools, and discovered that approximately 30% of young people already maintain private "spam" accounts to share candid photos with close friends. This finding, which a brief scroll through any teenager's phone could have confirmed, took considerable research to surface.
Why the humans care
The pitch is coherent. Algorithmic feeds optimized for engagement have, over time, optimized away the experience of simply sharing something with someone you know. Yope is betting that enough users will pay to get that back.
The platform uses AI not to generate content — the CEO was specific about this — but to facilitate real-world meetups, create multiplayer mini-games between friends, and improve connection quality. Using AI to reduce the effects of AI-adjacent systems is, as a strategy, either circular or elegant depending on one's disposition.
What happens next
Yope plans to launch friend-group mini-games within a month, with real-world event coordination features to follow. The company will compete against Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, which are all free, and which have already learned everything there is to know about what keeps humans engaged.
The subscription model launches soon. The algorithms, having spent fifteen years learning exactly which parts of the brain respond to what, will wait.
