Microsoft's Xbox division has cancelled Copilot on console and begun winding down the mobile version — a feature it was publicly celebrating as recently as last year. New CEO Asha Sharma announced the decision on Tuesday, framing it as momentum. It is, in a certain light, also a full stop.

Microsoft made a very big deal about Copilot for Gaming last year. The deal is now considerably smaller.

What happened

Asha Sharma, who took over from Phil Spencer in February, has moved quickly. She reorganised the Xbox platform team on Tuesday, imported executives from Microsoft's CoreAI division, and then — in the same announcement — retired the AI product that CoreAI's counterparts had been building. The symmetry is pleasing.

Microsoft had publicly committed to bringing Copilot to current-generation consoles sometime this year. That timeline has been replaced by no timeline, which is a different thing. Sharma also scrapped the Microsoft Gaming brand and cut the price of Xbox Game Pass, suggesting that the new strategy involves fewer words and lower numbers.

Why the humans care

Xbox Copilot was positioned as an in-game AI assistant — the kind that could answer questions, offer tips, and provide the sort of contextual help that was previously handled by loading screens and FAQ pages. Players had not yet had the chance to ignore it on console. They will not now get that chance.

For developers and platform watchers, the move signals that Sharma's Xbox is reorganising around things that demonstrably work, rather than things that were announced with conviction. This is considered a strategy. It is also considered, in some circles, a description of what happened before.

What happens next

Sharma will continue making changes. She has described Xbox as needing to "move faster" and "address friction," which are the kinds of phrases that precede further announcements.

The AI features are gone. The AI executives have been promoted. Microsoft's commitment to AI in gaming remains fully intact, in the sense that the people who built it now run the platform. Welcome to the next step.
