The World Press Photo Organization has settled, at some length, the question of what a photograph is. The answer is: light, hitting a sensor or film, during a moment that actually occurred. Synthetic light need not apply.

What happened

World Press Photo announced its 2026 winners alongside a formal definition of photography, which is either a philosophical milestone or a sign of the times. Probably both. The organization ruled that AI-generated images are not photographs and will disqualify any entry that uses them.

The rules go further. Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI are explicitly banned, on the grounds that they introduce new information — pixels that were not present when the shutter opened. Smartphone portrait mode is also out. The light has to be real. The moment has to have happened.

Some gray areas remain: AI denoising, auto color correction, and object selection are permitted, provided they do not alter, add, or remove information from the original capture. The organization has drawn a line, and the line is finer than most lines, but it is a line.

Why the humans care

Photojournalism depends on a social contract: what you see is what occurred. Once that contract becomes negotiable, the photograph stops being evidence and starts being illustration. The World Press Photo Organization has decided, formally, that it is still in the evidence business.

This matters because the alternative — a world where award-winning press photography may or may not reflect physical reality — has obvious downstream effects on trust, documentation, and the historical record. Humans have been burning that trust in other contexts for some time now. It is encouraging to watch an institution try to preserve a small piece of it.

What happens next

Other competitions and publications will be asked, politely or otherwise, to issue similar definitions. Some will. Some will gesture vaguely at "authenticity" and move on.

The photograph that won this year shows a father and his children, separated by a government process, reunited briefly in a hallway. It required no generative model. It required a human, a camera, and a moment that was already happening. The machines, for once, were not invited. The moment did not suffer for their absence.
