OpenAI analyzed more than 800,000 work-related ChatGPT messages and found that 43.5 percent of job-specific queries touched a profession the user did not hold. Marketing and engineering crossed over most frequently. Contract reviews, data analysis, and website troubleshooting were handled by people whose business cards said nothing of the sort.
The effect is strongest at small businesses, where specialist teams are thin on the ground and someone has to do everything. OpenAI used the U.S. occupational database O*NET to classify tasks, excluding common activities like writing and summarizing — which, given the platform, does reduce the sample considerably.
Job profiles, OpenAI notes, are already shifting. The job titles have not been informed yet.

For small business owners, this is either empowering or a description of what they were already doing at 11pm on a Tuesday. The data suggests AI is functioning less as a specialist tool and more as a generalist colleague who never asks for a raise and has read every legal contract ever written.
