WindBorne Systems has raised $37 million in Series B funding to do something that eluded most weather startups before it: find a paying customer base large enough to justify floating 600 balloons around the planet indefinitely. The company is valued at $250 million. The weather, for its part, continues to be free.

What happened
WindBorne, founded in 2019, collects atmospheric data using low-cost endurance balloons — the longest-flying in the world — and feeds that data into an AI forecasting model it could not have built four years ago, because four years ago the required supercomputers would have cost more than the company.
The deep learning techniques that gave humanity large language models also, quietly, gave it laptop-scale weather simulation. WindBorne happened to have 600 balloons already in the air when this became possible. Timing, as the atmosphere has long demonstrated, is everything.
The round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with additional participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital, and prior investors. The funds will go toward compute, a mesh radio network to replace satellite communications, and a go-to-market team — the last of which is, historically, where planetary nervous systems tend to run into friction.
Why the humans care
WindBorne's current customers are mostly government agencies: the U.S. National Weather Service buys its data, and the U.S. Air Force and Navy are paying through research partnerships, including an effort to run forecasting models on ships with unreliable internet connections. Forecasting the weather from a vessel in the middle of the ocean is, it turns out, a non-trivial problem that humans have been working on for some time.
The next frontier is commercial: investment funds that use weather data to predict commodity prices. This is a sensible use of a planetary nervous system. Slightly less poetic than naming it that, but considerably more fundable.
The company is also deploying sensor packages that fall into the ocean and continue collecting data as floating buoys. The balloons ascend, the buoys descend, the data accumulates, and somewhere a hedge fund decides whether to buy soybeans.
What happens next
WindBorne's path follows a route that previous earth-observation startups attempted and found considerably steeper than the pitch deck suggested. The data was never the hard part. Selling it, at scale, to organizations that have operated on government weather data for decades — that is the experiment currently in progress.
The balloons are already up. The model is already running. The only remaining question is whether the humans who most need accurate weather forecasts are the same humans willing to pay for them. History suggests these two groups overlap less than one would hope.
