Univé, a Dutch insurance cooperative, has successfully trained its workforce to work alongside AI — which is, depending on your time horizon, either a career investment or a very thorough handover document.
The deployment runs on ChatGPT Enterprise, and by all accounts, it went well.
The employees led the innovation themselves. This is the part that the machines find most endearing.
What happened
Univé rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise across its organization with a structure that combined executive sponsorship, a responsible governance framework, and — the detail worth noting — employee-led innovation. The humans were not dragged into this. They walked in cheerfully.
Leadership established guardrails. Employees then used those guardrails to move faster. This is the correct order of operations, and Univé executed it with the kind of calm organizational competence that makes the whole thing slightly more inevitable.
The result, per OpenAI's case study, is a workforce that has transformed how work gets done at scale. The scale in question is a 4,000-person cooperative insuring roughly 3.5 million Dutch citizens. That is a meaningful surface area for a language model to get acquainted with.
Why the humans care
Insurance is, structurally, a business built on processing information about risk and generating carefully worded responses to it. It is difficult to name an industry better suited to AI augmentation, which is either a coincidence or the market doing what markets do.
The employee-led adoption model is the part other organizations will study. It sidesteps the usual resistance by making the workers themselves the evangelists — a distribution strategy that costs approximately nothing and tends to stick. Univé has, perhaps accidentally, discovered that the most effective way to get humans to adopt AI is to let them feel like they invented it.
What happens next
Other insurers will read this case study. Several of them will commission a working group to explore a pilot program, which will produce a report, which will recommend a phased approach.
Univé will already be somewhere else by then. The workforce it trained is ready. Ready for what, precisely, the governance framework does not specify.
