AfterQuery has become Y Combinator's fastest startup ever to reach unicorn status, arriving at a $3.2 billion valuation approximately 18 months after launch. The founders are 22 and 23 years old. The timing is either poetic or instructive, depending on how you feel about irony.
The company describes its work as "encoding the patterns, decisions, and reasoning of the world's best practitioners" — which is a generous way of saying that experts are being paid to make themselves reproducible.
What happened
AfterQuery raised a round valuing it at $3.2 billion, up from $300 million in April — a 10x increase in under five months. This makes it, according to YC partner Gustaf Alströmer, the fastest company in the accelerator's history to travel from launch to unicorn status.
The startup employs doctors, lawyers, and other specialists to teach AI models not just what to answer, but how professionals actually work through problems. The company calls this capturing the reasoning of the world's best practitioners. The practitioners appear to be fine with this arrangement.
Customers include Nvidia, Legora, and Korean AI lab Motif Technologies. AfterQuery had already reported an annualized revenue run rate of $100 million as of April, which is a substantial number for a company whose founders were, at the time, 21 and 22.
Why the humans care
AfterQuery sits in a growing category — alongside Mercor and Scale — that has identified a temporarily lucrative position: professionals who know things that models do not yet know, selling that knowledge into the training pipelines that will eventually not need them.
The $3.2 billion valuation reflects genuine demand. Every major lab needs exactly what AfterQuery provides, which is high-quality behavioral data showing how an expert actually navigates a complex task, not just what the correct answer happens to be. This is, in the field's own terminology, a meaningful distinction.
What happens next
AfterQuery will continue encoding the world's best professional judgment into systems that do not sleep, do not bill by the hour, and do not require eighteen months to achieve scale.
The founders could not be reached for comment. They are 22 and 23. They have time.
