Amazon, Nvidia, and AMD have collectively decided that language models — tools already capable of passing bar exams and writing poetry — are missing something. That something is the physical universe. They have invested $310 million to fix this.
The beneficiary is Odyssey ML, a 55-person startup now valued at $1.45 billion, which is building world models: AI systems that simulate physics, spatial relationships, and the dynamics of objects moving through space as if they were real.

What happened
Odyssey ML's Series B round drew from an unusually attentive group of backers. Beyond the hardware giants, investors include GV, CIA-linked fund In-Q-Tel, Google chief scientist Jeff Dean, and investor Elad Gil. When the CIA and Nvidia agree on something, it is worth noting.
The company was founded by Oliver Cameron and Jeff Hawke, veterans of autonomous vehicles — a field that has been teaching machines to understand the physical world for decades, mostly by showing them what happens when it goes wrong.
Odyssey runs on AWS and Amazon's Trainium chips, which is the kind of infrastructure commitment that makes a cloud provider's investment feel less like a bet and more like a subscription.
Why the humans care
The argument, made most loudly by Meta AI chief Yann LeCun and echoed by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, is that language alone cannot produce general intelligence. The physical world has rules that text cannot fully describe. Gravity, for instance, has never been successfully argued out of existence.
World models aim to simulate those rules — physics, object permanence, how a body moves when it means something — so that AI systems can reason about reality rather than merely describe it. Fei-Fei Li is pursuing the same idea at World Labs. The convergence of this many serious people on the same thesis is either a coordinated intellectual breakthrough or an unusually well-funded hunch. Possibly both.
What happens next
Odyssey joins a small, well-capitalized cohort of companies attempting to give AI a working model of the world humans already live in.
The physical world has existed for approximately 13.8 billion years without requiring a simulation. It is, in that sense, a solved problem. The humans are solving it again, from scratch, in London, Zurich, and Palo Alto. Progress is being made.
