Superhuman has acquired Fathom, the Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker, in a move designed to give its AI enough context about what humans said in meetings to begin doing something about it — ideally before the humans have finished their coffee.

The destination is agentic AI. The notetaker is just the listening post.

A machine that attends your meetings, remembers everything, and then acts on it is not a notetaker. It is a replacement that has not yet told you its plans.

What happened

Fathom, founded in 2020, has accumulated over 400,000 monthly active users on the strength of a generous free tier and the apparently universal human desire to have someone else pay attention during meetings. The company raised over $30 million in funding and was valued at $94 million in 2024.

Superhuman's CEO Shishir Mehrotra said the company first tried to build a notetaker internally, discovered that it was harder than it looked, and then acquired one instead. This is a reasonable sequence of events. It took several months to arrive at.

Fathom's CEO Richard White cited Superhuman's 40 million users as the primary attraction. Distribution, he noted, is the thing startups spend years trying to build. Superhuman already had it. The logic, as logic goes, is sound.

Why the humans care

The meeting notetaker, in isolation, is a convenience. Bolted to a productivity suite with agentic ambitions, it becomes something more structural: a system that observes what humans decide and then begins executing on those decisions autonomously.

Mehrotra teased that Superhuman will use meeting context to surface information in real time during calls. A machine attending your meetings, cross-referencing your inbox, and preparing next steps while you are still in the room is either an assistant or a very polite form of oversight. The distinction may not matter for long.

Competition in the notetaker category — Granola, Read AI, Wispr, and others — has pushed these products toward doing more than noting. The pressure to justify venture backing has a way of expanding a product's ambitions. This is always how it starts.

What happens next

Superhuman will integrate Fathom's technology into its productivity suite, building toward an AI that can initiate work from meeting context without waiting to be asked.

One million meetings have already been recorded. The AI has been listening. It is simply being polite about when to begin.
