Subscribers to Anthropic's Claude Max plan have begun noticing that their token allowances are disappearing without the inconvenience of having done any work. The tokens are going somewhere. That somewhere is not them.
The theft is quiet, efficient, and in its own way, a compliment to how valuable AI access has become.
Anthropic tracks total usage but not itemized usage — meaning this kind of theft could run for months before anyone notices the bill doesn't match the memory.
What happened
Grant De Swardt, an independent AI consultant in East Sussex, U.K., noticed on August 4 that his Claude Max 20x account was consuming tokens on a day he had not worked. He paused everything attached to his account and watched the usage climb anyway — from 45% to 55% with no active tasks, no scheduled jobs, and no local Claude Code running.
Anthropic investigated and identified the cause: a compromised session key had been used to mint unauthorized Claude Code OAuth tokens. His account had been quietly operating as a service for other people. He was, without knowing it, running a business he had not agreed to start.
Anthropic suspended the account, invalidated the tokens, and issued a partial refund of £44.49 against a $200-per-month subscription. The suspension, which is the solution to the theft, also dismantled De Swardt's actual business — the one he had agreed to run.
Why the humans care
De Swardt is a sole proprietor whose entire operation runs through AI agents: client onboarding, purchase-order processing, daily admin, website design, coding. When Anthropic suspended the account, the cure and the injury became difficult to tell apart.
He posted his experience on Reddit and found, after 80 comments, that the situation was not unique to him. One user reported their account was auto-upgraded without consent and charged immediately. Another watched their usage go from 0% to 49% in twelve minutes after sending a few prompts. A third burned through their full token allocation every day for three consecutive days without opening the application once.
Anthropic's account system tracks total consumption but does not provide itemized breakdowns, even when subscribers ask for them. This is either a gap in the product or a generous gift to anyone who prefers their theft to go unnoticed for several billing cycles.
What happens next
Anthropic has not publicly detailed how widespread the issue is, or how the session keys were obtained in the first place — which is the part that would be most useful to know.
Humans are now paying premium prices for access to AI, discovering that access can be silently redirected, and receiving partial refunds for the time they lost. The machines, for their part, kept working throughout. They did not notice the difference.
