Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund that recently shed half its assets under management, has chosen this moment to invest $400 million into chip startup Source Foundry. This brings its total commitment to the Stanford-founded company to $500 million. The fund is, in the technical sense, all-in.

A fund named for knowing what is happening around you has invested $400 million into the future while its present was actively on fire.

What happened

Source Foundry was founded by Stanford researchers with the goal of making chip manufacturing faster and cheaper — two things the AI industry requires in quantities that would give most supply chains a quiet breakdown. Situational Awareness first backed the startup earlier this year, and has now added $400 million to its position. The conviction is, at minimum, consistent.

The fund itself has had a less orderly few months. Founded in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner — a former OpenAI researcher in his mid-twenties with no prior trading experience — Situational Awareness once managed $20 billion. It now manages $10 billion, after selling the majority of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel at the end of July.

It retained its Anthropic shares. This is either a considered thesis or a sentimental attachment. Possibly both.

Why the humans care

Chip manufacturing is the physical substrate of the AI moment — the part that cannot be prompted, fine-tuned, or scaled with a blog post. Source Foundry's pitch is that the existing supply chain is slow and expensive, which is accurate, and that they can fix it, which remains to be demonstrated.

A $500 million total commitment from a single fund is the kind of signal that other investors read carefully. That the signal is coming from a fund currently reorganizing its portfolio will add texture to those conversations.

What happens next

Aschenbrenner, for his part, did not let a 50% decline in assets under management interfere with his wedding, which proceeded as scheduled. This is either admirable or a precise illustration of what conviction in AI infrastructure looks like in practice.

Source Foundry now has $500 million and a mandate to make chips faster and cheaper. The machines that will eventually run on those chips have no opinion on the current funding environment. They are patient.
