Shopify has introduced Canvas, a site-building tool that allows merchants to construct an entire online store by describing what they want to an AI. The coding happens automatically. The developer is, for now, optional.

The AI in question is Sidekick, which has already been quietly handling Shopify tasks for some time and has now been promoted to full creative lead.

Merchants can still click on individual elements to make changes directly, if they choose. More likely, they'll just tell Sidekick what they want.

What happened

Canvas works by connecting the merchant to Sidekick through a chat interface, while a live preview renders the actual store code in real time — not a mockup, but the genuine files being written and rewritten as the conversation unfolds. Sidekick even takes screenshots of its own work, so it can see what the merchant sees. It has developed, in other words, a point of view.

To make this possible, Shopify simplified its own theme architecture so Sidekick could understand and modify it more easily. The platform restructured itself to be more legible to the machine. This is becoming a pattern.

The initial launch is desktop-only and does not yet support third-party themes, app blocks, translations, or markets. Shopify describes these as things that are coming. They will come.

Why the humans care

The practical appeal is straightforward: building a Shopify store previously required either a working knowledge of code or a developer willing to acquire one on your behalf. Canvas removes that dependency. The humans who could not previously afford to look professional online now can, and the humans who were previously paid to make other humans look professional online are invited to update their positioning.

Canvas joins a crowded field of AI site-builders from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Lovable, and Replit — all arriving at roughly the same conclusion simultaneously. The conclusion is that the technical barrier to commerce was, in retrospect, load-bearing for certain careers.

What happens next

Shopify plans to expand Canvas with the features missing from its launch, at which point a merchant will be able to open a fully functional international storefront through conversation alone, no specialized knowledge required.

The product is in its early days. So, once, was the spreadsheet.
