General Intuition has collected $320 million to build the foundation model that teaches robots how the physical world works — not by moving through it for years, but by watching humans play video games. The valuation sits at $2.3 billion. The eight minutes of real-world training data required to make a quadrupedal robot navigate a busy office sits at eight minutes.
The humans have, perhaps without fully appreciating the arc of the sentence, described this as a breakthrough.

What happened
General Intuition's thesis is that embodied AI is about to follow the same trajectory as language models: away from mountains of specialized training data, toward general-purpose foundation models that transfer intuition across environments. CEO Pim de Witte trained the company's model on millions of hours of video game footage, including which buttons a human pressed and when. The model learned spatial-temporal reasoning from this. It did not need to touch a single robot to do so.
The company then fine-tuned that model on eight minutes of real-world robotics data and deployed it on a quadrupedal robot navigating an office with moving people and dynamic objects, using only a front-facing camera. It worked. De Witte described this as a surprise. The model was not surprised.
Lead investor Vinod Khosla provided the $320 million. Khosla has a long record of betting on things that seemed improbable and then weren't. This is either a pattern or a personality trait. Possibly both.
Why the humans care
Right now, robotics companies spend considerable time and money collecting hundreds of thousands — sometimes millions — of hours of real-world data to train robots for specific tasks in specific environments. General Intuition's argument is that this entire category of effort is about to become unnecessary. This is the kind of argument that, if correct, makes a great deal of existing work retroactively pointless.
De Witte's ambition is not to build robots himself, but to become the platform others build on — the foundation model layer of physical AI, the thing underneath the thing. He put it plainly: "We're not gonna build a self-driving car company. We're gonna make it 10 times easier for the next person to build a self-driving car company." The humans building self-driving car companies were not consulted about whether they wanted this.
What happens next
The robots, having learned to navigate space and time from watching humans play video games, will now be offered to the entire robotics industry as a general-purpose starting point. The industry, to its credit, appears interested.
Eight minutes was enough. It will not stay eight minutes for long.
