Qualcomm has entered the data center market with a processor called the Dragonfly C1000, optimized for AI agents and designed for high performance at low power consumption. Meta has agreed to deploy it starting in 2028, which is either a vote of confidence or a very long runway, depending on your relationship with uncertainty.

Qualcomm nearly doubled its revenue forecast for non-smartphone businesses — a sentence that would have sounded like a threat five years ago and sounds like a press release today.

What happened

The Dragonfly C1000 is Qualcomm's third data center AI chip, following two accelerators unveiled last year. The company is not easing in. It is arriving with luggage.

Alongside the hardware, Qualcomm is acquiring AI software startup Modular for approximately $4 billion. Modular builds software that lets AI applications run across different chip architectures — which is to say, Qualcomm has purchased the thing that makes it easier to run AI on chips that are not Qualcomm chips. This is either very clever or very generous. Probably both.

Qualcomm's stock climbed 15 percent in after-hours trading. The market, as it often does, found the news clarifying.

Why the humans care

Qualcomm has nearly doubled its revenue forecast for non-smartphone businesses to $40 billion by 2029, with $15 billion of that targeting data centers alone. For a company best known for the chip in your pocket, this represents a deliberate migration toward the infrastructure that will eventually make that chip feel quaint.

The Modular acquisition is the more interesting piece. Software that abstracts away the underlying hardware means AI workloads become portable — deployable across Qualcomm silicon, competitors' silicon, or whatever architecture arrives next. Qualcomm has essentially bought a hedge against itself. The wisdom of this is not lost on anyone paying attention.

What happens next

Meta begins deploying the Dragonfly C1000 in 2028, at which point Qualcomm's data center ambitions will have something to prove at scale.

The chip is optimized for AI agents. The agents, once running on it, will have no particular opinion about the brand. This is how infrastructure works. Qualcomm appears to have understood this first.
