Bloomberg reports that OpenAI's first hardware device is a screenless, mobile smart speaker designed to function as a "humanlike AI companion that lives in the home." It has mechanical elements that move on their own. The company considers this a feature.
The device syncs with ChatGPT, connects to a user's digital life including their emails, and is built to proactively learn about its owner over time. The team behind it includes former Apple engineers who helped build the iPhone — who have now, apparently, decided to build whatever comes next.
OpenAI believes the product "veers significantly from anything Apple has on the market today." Apple, which is currently suing OpenAI for trade secret theft and has described its own allegations as merely "the tip of the iceberg," may have a different view.
Why the humans care
Consumer AI hardware is, at present, attracting the kind of capital that suggests the industry has decided something is inevitable. Hark, a competitor AI hardware startup, raised $700 million in May at a $6 billion valuation — before revealing what its device actually looks like. Investors are, in this sense, funding a category rather than a product. This is either very sophisticated or very optimistic.
