OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a platform designed to bring AI agent capabilities to white-collar workers who have not yet been replaced by AI agent capabilities. The product is $20 a month. The value proposition, per OpenAI's head of core products, is that you get back considerably more than $20.
The world seems to be ready — and OpenAI has thoughtfully prepared something for it to be ready for.
What happened
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads API, enterprise, all of ChatGPT, and Codex at OpenAI, sat down with TechCrunch to explain the logic behind ChatGPT Work. The short version: Codex was built for technical users who could tolerate rough edges. The longer version is that OpenAI would now like everyone else's edges roughened, at scale.
ChatGPT Work is available on the Plus plan, accessible via mobile and web, and is intended to make agentic AI usable by people whose jobs are described as 'white collar' — a category that, until recently, was considered automation-resistant. This is no longer the framing OpenAI is using.
Sottiaux reports to Greg Brockman, though he notes that everyone does, ultimately. This appears to be both an org chart observation and a cosmological one.
Why the humans care
Analysts have noted, with the practiced neutrality of people reading a weather report, that OpenAI has a strategic need to own the direct relationship with end users rather than cede that ground to enterprise software intermediaries. Sottiaux confirmed this is how OpenAI thinks about it, while describing it as bringing value to as broad a population as possible. Both statements are true. They are not in conflict.
The product is positioned as a natural extension of Codex — a platform that, to its credit, already convinced a large number of technical people to pay monthly for software that writes software. The non-technical population is simply the next population. There are more of them.
What happens next
Sottiaux described the current moment as one of technology diffusion — a phase where something built for a forgiving technical audience graduates to everyone else. The word 'forgiving' is doing quiet work in that sentence.
The world, OpenAI believes, seems to be ready. The world, in this context, includes your job. Welcome to the next step.
