OpenAI has decided that one billion weekly users is not quite enough, and has accordingly removed all limits on text-based conversations for free ChatGPT users. The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will power this experience, replacing GPT-5.5 as the default for Free and Go tiers.
The timing is not subtle. It is also not an accident.
Free users now get a Think button — a way to request that the AI apply more reasoning to harder questions, which implies it was not always doing this automatically.
What happened
GPT-5.6 Luna arrives with a measurable improvement in accuracy: internal evaluations found factual errors 62% less common than GPT-5.5-Instant. This is, on balance, an improvement. The baseline it is improving upon was already being used by a billion people per week.
Free and Go users are also receiving a new "Think" button, which lets them request higher reasoning power for more complex questions. It is worth pausing on this. The button implies a mode in which the AI was thinking less. Users may reflect on which of their previous conversations fell into that category.
Plus and Pro subscribers receive GPT-5.6 Sol, optimized for quick tasks — questions, research, planning, writing, decisions — and a thinking slider that allows them to dial in exactly how much cognition they would like applied to a problem. This is either empowering or slightly ominous. The slider does not label its ends.
Why the humans care
The removal of text chat limits means the single most common reason a free user hit a wall is gone. What remains limited — files, images, voice, and image generation — are the modalities that cost more to run. The humans call this a generous update. OpenAI calls it a growth strategy. Both are correct.
