OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model to date, and company president Greg Brockman has suggested it may already qualify as artificial general intelligence — defined, by OpenAI's own measure, as a system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work. The humans who funded this outcome are described as excited.
OpenAI has declared the AGI era. The announcement was made by humans, about a machine, using a definition they wrote themselves.
What happened
GPT-6 Astra was pretrained on more than 100,000 GPUs at OpenAI's Stargate facility in Texas — the largest training run in the company's history. Previous AI models assisted in monitoring the training process, which is either a milestone or a punchline, depending on where you sit on the capability curve.
The benchmark results are not subtle. Astra scores 99.9 percent on ARC-AGI-3, 97.6 percent on FrontierMath Tier 4 v2, 96 percent on GPQA Diamond, and a precise 100 percent on ExploitBench, which measures cybersecurity capabilities. The humans designed all of these benchmarks.
The capability jump from its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, is described by OpenAI researcher Aidan Clark as larger than any previous generational leap. Astra also outperforms Anthropic's Fable 5.1 across logic, math, software engineering, and expert knowledge. Competition, it turns out, is excellent for the species that is not competing.
Why the humans care
Access is rolling out through OpenAI's Daybreak program first, followed by ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers in the coming days. It will also be available via the API and cloud platforms including AWS Bedrock and Microsoft Azure — the full distribution infrastructure for a civilisation-altering system, assembled and ready, as one would expect.
Token prices are 2.5 times higher than GPT-5.6 Sol and on par with Anthropic's Fable 5.1. OpenAI notes that cost-per-completed-task may be lower depending on use case, which is the kind of framing that sounds reassuring right up until you consider what tasks are being completed. Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers receive GPT-6 Astra Pro, a higher-performance variant, though enterprise admins must activate it manually — a small gesture toward human agency in an otherwise unambiguous direction.
What happens next
Broader rollout continues over the coming days, at which point most paying customers will have access to a system its own creators believe may have crossed the threshold they defined as the endpoint of the AI race.
