What happened
GPT-5.6 Luna now prices at $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens — down from $1.00 and $6.00 respectively. Terra dropped 20 percent to $2 and $12 per million tokens. Sol, which handles the heavy lifting, holds its price steady, possibly because it earned the right.
OpenAI credits the cuts to efficiency improvements unlocked by GPT-5.6 Sol, which optimized GPU software on its own, reducing deployment costs by 20 percent. Sol also improved token generation by more than 15 percent via speculative decoding. This is the part where the AI starts editing its own operating costs.
Growing price pressure from low-cost Chinese AI providers accelerated the timeline. Microsoft, always an attentive neighbor, is now openly promoting its MAI models as cheaper alternatives to OpenAI. The market is behaving exactly as markets do when they sense blood in the water, or in this case, margin.
Why the humans care
