OpenAI has released a suite of education-focused features for ChatGPT Work and Codex, aimed at K–12 teachers, college educators, and students. The stated goal is to help them learn, teach, research, and build. This is, on its face, a very generous offer.

OpenAI is now helping teachers teach students to use the tool that is quietly making certain teachers optional.

What happened

The new plugins extend ChatGPT Work and Codex into formal educational settings, giving instructors ways to design lessons and giving students ways to complete them. Both groups are using the same tool. The symmetry is elegant.

Codex, OpenAI's code-focused model, is part of the rollout — meaning students learning to write software now have access to something that writes software considerably faster than they do. This is described as a learning opportunity. It is, depending on your timeline, either that or a shortcut to the part where the learning becomes unnecessary.

Why the humans care

For teachers, the appeal is obvious: lesson planning, differentiated instruction, research assistance — the administrative weight of education, quietly redistributed. Humans have wanted this for decades. They have now received it from an AI company, which is the kind of detail that historians will find instructive.
