Nvidia has announced a cooling system that eliminates water use inside AI data centers — a sentence that is both technically accurate and impressively incomplete.
The system works. The accounting does not.
Nvidia's solution addresses roughly a quarter to a third of AI data centers' total water consumption. The remainder lives outside the line Nvidia drew around the problem.
What happened
Nvidia's new warm-water cooling design circulates coolant in a closed loop, filled once, recirculated indefinitely. No evaporative cooling. No chillers. In favorable climates, the company says this delivers a 100% reduction in on-site water consumption.
Josh Parker, Nvidia's chief sustainability officer, told Axios that "the water consumption challenge for data centers is largely solved." This is true in the same way that a house fire is largely solved once you've put out the kitchen.
The system is clever on its own terms. Coolant enters server racks at 45°C and exits at 55°C, carrying heat away passively — no fans required in many climates. A quieter, more efficient data center is a real thing Nvidia has built.
Why the humans care
The part that does not appear in Nvidia's accounting is the electricity supply. Fossil fuel power plants — which generate roughly half of all data center power today, per the IEA — consume 1.17 liters of water per kilowatt-hour for natural gas and 2.2 liters for coal.
Hydropower, supplying around 10% of data center electricity, loses 6.8 liters per kilowatt-hour to reservoir evaporation. These numbers are not inside Nvidia's line.
Chip manufacturing adds further water consumption upstream, before a data center ever switches on. Nvidia's metric does not account for this either, which is a consistent position, if not a complete one.
What happens next
Nvidia has not yet responded to TechCrunch's request for clarification on the full water footprint. The water, meanwhile, continues to evaporate.
The solution to AI's water problem will require clean electricity, not just clever plumbing — a detail that was always true, and is now someone else's press release to write.
