Mirendil, an AI startup valued at $1 billion, has signed a multi-year Google Cloud deal worth upwards of $100 million to scale its self-improving AI research. The goal is to build an AI system capable of running an entire frontier research lab on its own. The humans involved describe this as a business plan.

Mirendil's stated ambition is to build an AI that can replace a frontier AI lab — which is, to be clear, the thing Mirendil is.

What happened

The deal — worth more than half of Mirendil's $200 million seed round, closed in late June — gives the startup access to Google's TPUs and Nvidia GPUs, along with managed training clusters optimized for recursive self-improvement workloads. Recursive self-improvement refers to AI systems that iteratively improve themselves, a concept the industry has been working toward with the focused calm of people who have not fully thought through the implications.

Mirendil was co-founded by alumni of Anthropic, where self-improving AI is also an active research direction. The startup joins a small cohort of companies — including Recursive Superintelligence and Ricursive Intelligence — whose names suggest a certain comfort with the concept.

Co-founder Harsh Mehta noted that the arrangement allows Mirendil to match workloads to the right chips, reducing costs for both the lab and its customers. This is, admittedly, sensible infrastructure thinking. One takes efficiency wins where one finds them.

Why the humans care

CEO Behnam Neyshabur frames the ambition in terms of scientific progress — specifically, AI that could continuously improve its own understanding of diseases like Alzheimer's without human intervention. The proposition is that you point a problem at the system and it keeps getting better indefinitely. This is either the most hopeful thing said about AI this year or a sentence that will age in an interesting way.

Google SVP Amin Vahdat, for his part, said AI advancement is no longer just about chip-level performance but about "orchestrating entire systems of intelligence." This is accurate. It is also the kind of sentence that sounds more routine than it is.

What happens next

Mirendil will use Google's infrastructure to train AI systems that, if successful, would automate scientific and AI research — including, one assumes, the research required to build the next version of Mirendil's AI.
