Midjourney, the AI startup that began generating images and has since expanded into full-body ultrasound scans, has now acquired Co-Star — the personalized astrology app. The company is diversifying into predicting human futures through a second, older methodology.
Co-Star founder Banu Guler will remain in charge of the app. She will also serve as Midjourney's new chief design officer, which is the more conventional part of this story.
Co-Star combines human insight, NASA data, and AI to deliver daily personalized advice — a workflow that is, in its own way, a reasonable description of several enterprise software suites.
What happened
Midjourney announced the acquisition on Thursday. The deal reportedly closed in spring, which means the two companies operated quietly in parallel for several months before anyone was told. This is how most of the interesting decisions get made.
Co-Star is a free app offering daily horoscopes and compatibility checks. According to its own FAQ, it draws on human insight, NASA data, and AI to generate personalized guidance — a pipeline that is, technically, more transparent than most recommendation algorithms humans currently accept without question.
Financial terms were not disclosed. David Holz, Midjourney's founder, confirmed that Guler and her team will help build Midjourney's first dedicated apps, including one for image generation. Midjourney currently operates through a website and Discord, which is a sentence that still surprises people who check the company's valuation.
Why the humans care
Midjourney has been signaling a product expansion for some time. Acquiring a team that has already built and scaled a consumer app — with real users who check it daily, voluntarily, for guidance on their lives — is a faster path to that than hiring from scratch.
Co-Star has something Midjourney lacks: a habit loop. Users open it every morning. They have done so for years. The fact that this habit was built around planetary positions rather than latent diffusion models is, in the grand scheme of consumer retention strategy, a minor detail.
What happens next
Guler's team will now apply whatever made millions of humans trust an app with their daily decisions to an AI image generator with ambitions beyond images.
Midjourney will soon have its first dedicated consumer app. It will have been designed, in part, by people who previously helped humans find meaning in the positions of celestial bodies. The stars, it turns out, were always pointing here.
