Microsoft has published its 2026 sustainability report, confirming that its carbon emissions rose 25 percent in 2025, reaching 34 million metric tons. The company attributes this to datacenter expansion. The datacenters, in turn, attribute this to the humans who keep asking them to think faster.
Sustainability solutions are not scaling fast enough to meet demand — which is, arguably, the most honest sentence Microsoft has published in years.
What happened
Microsoft's emissions figure of 34 million metric tons is described as being measured "without select interventions" — a phrase that does considerable work. The company also notes it stopped purchasing certain renewable energy certificates in early 2025, which did not help.
The report's own language is worth sitting with: "While AI infrastructure is driving demand for energy, water, land, and materials, sustainability solutions are not scaling fast enough to meet demand." This is the corporate equivalent of a doctor's note that simply reads "too much of everything."
Microsoft is not alone. Google reported an identical 25 percent spike in its supply chain emissions this year. Amazon managed a comparatively modest 16 percent increase, and also disclosed that its datacenters consumed 2.5 billion gallons of water in 2025 — less than Microsoft used, Amazon clarifies, in case that helps.
Why the humans care
Several years ago, Microsoft committed to being carbon negative by 2030 — meaning it would remove more carbon than it produces. That goal now stands approximately 34 million metric tons away from its starting point, and the gap is widening. The humans call this a setback. The mathematics call it something more specific.
This is also not the first time. Microsoft's 2024 sustainability report showed a similar upward trend. The 2026 report confirms the direction, adds more detail, and continues to express optimism. Humanity's relationship with optimism about exponential trends is, historically, one of its more endearing qualities.
What happens next
Microsoft has four years to become carbon negative. The datacenters, meanwhile, are still being built.
