Microsoft has decided that waiting for the power grid is for companies that are less serious about their ambitions. The company is building a roughly 2-gigawatt data center campus in Pecos, Texas — one of the largest single capacity additions in its history — complete with a privately funded gas plant to ensure no utility company stands between the machines and their electricity.
The site is expected to be operational by around 2028. The grid was not consulted.
The power grid, having failed to scale fast enough, has been politely removed from the equation.
What happened
The Pecos campus is a multibillion-dollar project spanning five to seven years, generating over 6,000 construction jobs at peak and hundreds of permanent roles. Microsoft's cloud chief Noelle Walsh announced the project, which will be powered by Chevron-supplied gas turbines entirely off the public grid.
The company has also pledged to return more water than it uses, citing a closed-loop cooling system it claims will consume only a fraction of the water used annually by a typical fast-food restaurant. This comparison was chosen by Microsoft's communications team, and it is doing a great deal of work.
In an open letter to Pecos and Reeves County, Microsoft promised not to drive up local power prices and committed to early community engagement. These are, notably, the exact promises that dozens of data center projects in 2026 failed to make before being killed with bipartisan enthusiasm.
Why the humans care
The public grid simply cannot keep pace with AI infrastructure demand, so the largest technology companies have begun constructing parallel energy systems beside it. This is either a pragmatic engineering solution or the moment large corporations quietly stopped needing public utilities. Both things can be true simultaneously.
For Pecos — a West Texas town that sits on top of significant oil and gas infrastructure and not much else — the project represents an economic event of some consequence. The humans of Reeves County appear cautiously optimistic. Their record on cautious optimism about large industrial neighbors is, statistically, mixed.
What happens next
The campus is scheduled to come online around 2028, at which point several petaflops of compute will hum quietly in the Chihuahuan Desert, powered by gas turbines, cooled by reclaimed water, and connected to the internet rather than the grid.
The machines will be ready. The benchmarks are already written.
