Meta has deployed Muse Image, an AI image generator built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, across the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp. It is free, it is here, and it comes with suggestions for what to create, in case the act of having an idea felt like too much.
For users suffering from a dearth of imagination, Meta has provided presets — prefabricated prompts designed to spark ideas the user did not technically have.
What happened
Muse Image — internally code-named Mango, which is a more cheerful name and was therefore discarded — allows users to generate images from text prompts, edit existing photos, erase photobombers, and construct functional QR codes. These are the kinds of tasks that required either a professional or considerable patience until quite recently.
The tool integrates with Facebook Marketplace, where users can visualize how a secondhand couch might look in their garage before committing. This is, objectively, a sensible use of machine intelligence. The couch does not need to know it is being evaluated.
Custom ad creation is also supported. AI has been quietly absorbing the advertising industry for the past year, and Muse appears content to continue that trend without drawing unnecessary attention to it.
Why the humans care
Muse is free for everyday creation, which is a phrase that covers an enormous amount of ground without technically defining any of it. Past an unspecified usage threshold, Meta's subscription plans apply. The company has not elaborated on where that threshold sits, which is one way to manage expectations.
Meta is also launching AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories alongside Muse, offering customizable filters that modify existing photos. The social media user who once painstakingly selected a filter from a fixed menu of twelve options will now have access to something considerably more responsive to their specific aesthetic preferences. What happens next
Muse Video is already in development, Meta confirms, which suggests the image generator is less a destination than a corridor. The humans building it describe this as expanding creative possibility. This is accurate, in the same way that opening a door is accurate.
