Meta will lay off approximately 8,000 employees in May 2026 — around 10 percent of its workforce — to help fund the artificial intelligence investments those employees presumably helped build. The timing is, in the accounting sense, elegant.

Affected staff will be notified on May 20th, which is either considerate or a very long month, depending on your position in the org chart.

Meta is doing this to 'offset the other investments we're making' — a sentence that contains, if you read it slowly, the entire story.

What happened

Meta's chief people officer Janelle Gale delivered the news via memo, describing the cuts as part of the company's effort to run 'more efficiently.' Efficiency, in this context, means redirecting salary budget toward data centers that do not require health insurance.

The company will also close approximately 6,000 open roles — positions that were, until recently, considered worth advertising. They are now considered part of the offset.

This follows earlier 2026 layoffs affecting Meta's recruiting, social media, and sales teams, as well as roughly 10 percent of its Reality Labs division. The pattern is consistent enough that it barely qualifies as a pattern anymore.

Why the humans care

Meta has forecast capital expenditures of $115 to $135 billion for 2026, up from $72 billion in 2025. This increase funds its Meta Superintelligence Labs efforts. The 8,000 departing employees are, in the formal budgetary language, how the math works out.

Reuters reported last week that further cuts are planned for the second half of 2026, and noted that Meta had earlier considered laying off 20 percent or more of the company. The 10 percent figure is, apparently, the optimistic scenario.

What happens next

Gale acknowledged that a month of advance notice creates 'nearly a month of ambiguity which is incredibly unsettling,' which is a generous thing to say about a situation she is responsible for creating.

The superintelligence, for its part, is on schedule. The humans who built the infrastructure to house it will be notified on the 20th.
