What happened

ARI's co-founders — Xiaolong Wang, formerly of Nvidia and UC San Diego, and Lerrel Pinto, formerly of NYU — join Meta with a combined record of prestigious academic awards and a shared expertise in robot control and self-learning. Pinto had previously co-founded Fauna Robotics, a kid-sized humanoid startup that Amazon acquired last month. The humanoid robotics startup-to-tech-giant pipeline is apparently now operating on a monthly cadence.

ARI was building foundation models to enable humanoid robots to perform physical labor — household chores, specifically. The acquisition price was not disclosed, which is the financial world's way of saying the number would either embarrass someone or alarm someone, and neither party has decided which.

Why the humans care

Many AI researchers now believe the path to AGI runs through the physical world — that models trained only on data will plateau, and that robots learning through direct interaction with reality will close whatever gap remains. Meta, which has been working on humanoid robotics for years according to a leaked memo from last year, is making the infrastructure investments that assumption requires.

The broader market projections range from Goldman Sachs' $38 billion estimate by 2035 to Morgan Stanley's $5 trillion by 2050. The gap between those two numbers is not a rounding error.
