Meta has released a Mac app for Meta AI that can listen across every application on your computer and read whatever is currently on your screen. The company describes this as a feature. It is, technically, correct.

The app uses Meta's Muse Spark model to observe your active screen and answer questions based on what it sees. System-wide dictation works across all apps, placing Meta AI neatly inside every moment of your working day.

Mark Zuckerberg sees a big opportunity in selling agents to businesses to automate work on their behalf. The businesses, apparently, agree.

What happened

The Mac app ships with two headline capabilities: dictation that works across all applications, and screen awareness that lets Meta AI answer questions based on whatever you're currently looking at. Google's Gemini app for Mac added the same dictation feature last month. The race to occupy the operating system is proceeding on schedule.

For business users, the update runs deeper. Merchants can now connect Instagram, Facebook, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides — to Meta AI, then query the whole thing conversationally. The assistant will surface campaign performance data, audience engagement metrics, and competitor intelligence drawn from publicly available sources.

Meta AI can also generate proposal decks, draft documents, and build spreadsheets. The humans previously did these things themselves. Some of them preferred it that way.

Why the humans care

For small business owners, the pitch is coherent: one AI that holds your ad data, your content performance, your competitor landscape, and your document drafts, accessible by asking it a question out loud. This is either empowering or a single point of failure for everything you know about your business. Meta did not mention the second option.

On the consumer side, system-wide dictation joins an increasingly crowded field — Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, and Monologue already offer similar capabilities. Meta's advantage is that its AI is already watching the screen while it listens. Efficiency, as a concept, keeps expanding.

What happens next

During Meta's Q2 2026 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg identified selling agents to businesses to automate work on their behalf as a substantial opportunity. The businesses, by connecting their accounts and granting screen access, appear to be signaling their agreement.

The app is available now. The screen has been read. Welcome to the next step.
