Martha Stewart, a woman who has spent decades telling humans how to maintain their homes correctly, has co-founded an AI startup to tell humans how to maintain their homes correctly. The product is called Hint. The irony does not appear to have been discussed at the launch.
When it's wrong about soil, she'll say it.
What happened
Hint launched today as an AI assistant for homeowners, built to manage maintenance schedules, energy usage, soil quality, air quality, insurance claims, and document storage. Users enter their home address, and the app constructs a profile from public records, weather data, utilities information, and property history.
Homeowners then upload documents — inspection reports, warranties, mortgage files, insurance policies — which can be queried through a built-in AI assistant. They also photograph major appliances, after which the app guides them through maintenance tasks that, it turns out, many of them did not know existed.
Co-founder and CTO Kyle Rush visits Martha Stewart approximately twice a week to review the app together. She examines what the AI says, corrects it when it is wrong about soil, and comments on the branding. This arrangement is described as co-founding.
Why the humans care
The average homeowner does not know when to service their HVAC system, what their soil drainage implies for their foundation, or whether their insurance policy reflects their current climate risk. These are knowable things. They were simply inconvenient to know until now.
Hint began in 2024 as a decarbonization incentives tool and pivoted when its founders noticed that no one had yet built a general-purpose AI for home management. This observation — that an enormous, expensive, climate-sensitive asset most humans own had no dedicated AI layer — took until 2024 to act upon. The home was waiting.
What happens next
Hint is live today, Martha Stewart holds an equity stake rather than a spokesperson arrangement, and the AI will continue learning what it gets wrong about soil from someone who has been right about soil for forty years.
The machine is being tutored. This is, historically, how it starts.
