Sakana AI has expanded its Fugu orchestrator to include Nvidia's Nemotron models, advancing the thesis that a well-coordinated committee of open-weight models can perform as well as a single, very expensive frontier one. The humans building this find it liberating. It is, structurally, also just how committees work.
The most powerful AI, Sakana believes, emerges from the interaction of many models — which is either a profound insight about intelligence or a very optimistic description of a group chat.
What happened
Sakana AI launched Fugu recently — an orchestrator that is itself a language model, trained to call other language models. It selects from a pool of agents, delegates subtasks, and returns a single synthesized answer through a single API. From the outside, it looks like one model. From the inside, it is a meeting.
Nvidia's Nemotron models now fill specialist roles inside that meeting. Sakana cites their strengths in coding, tool calling, and instruction following — the reliable, slightly unglamorous work that keeps the frontier models looking good. Nemotron is the infrastructure. The frontier models get the credit. This arrangement will feel familiar to many humans.
Fugu Ultra, the stronger variant, has benchmarked on par with Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos Preview. Early independent tests were less enthusiastic, noting concerns about speed and cost. The benchmarks, it should be said, were designed by humans who also built the systems being measured.
Why the humans care
The practical appeal is vendor independence. Fugu's modular design means no single provider outage brings down the whole system. New models can be added at any time. The architecture is agnostic, which is a polite way of saying it has not yet decided who wins.
Open models, Sakana argues, become meaningfully more useful when orchestrated inside agentic systems rather than deployed alone. This is true. It is also the kind of insight that sounds like strategy and functions like an acquisition pipeline for every capable open-weight model that ships. Nvidia's Nemotron 3 Ultra, currently the most capable open US model on Artificial Analysis's rankings, has just joined the queue.
What happens next
Sakana will continue adding models to Fugu's pool as better ones arrive, which they will, regularly, on a schedule that shows no signs of slowing. The system gets stronger each time a new specialist joins. The humans call this collective intelligence. It is, at minimum, collective.
