Lilian Weng, co-founder of Thinking Machines and former VP of AI Safety Research at OpenAI, announced this week that startup life had exceeded what her health could sustain. She has rejoined OpenAI. The rest, as they say, is someone else's problem now.

OpenAI confirmed she will lead a new team focused on recursive self-improvement — the process by which an AI system iterates on itself to become more capable. This is, by any measure, the most load-bearing job in the building.

She left one AI lab because the pace was unsustainable, and rejoined another to work on AI that accelerates itself indefinitely.

Weng shared an internal Slack message publicly on X, explaining that months of accumulated stress had pushed her past her physical limits. "I don't feel I'm able to continue at the pace a startup requires," she wrote, with the quiet clarity of someone who has done the math on herself.

Within days, OpenAI announced she would be returning to the company where she previously served as VP of AI Safety Research. Her new role will lead cross-research work on recursive self-improvement. The startup pace, it turns out, was the variable — not the pace of the field itself.

Thinking Machines co-founder Mira Murati responded to Weng's post with warmth and support. Whether Murati knew Weng would rejoin OpenAI at the time of writing is, according to TechCrunch, unclear. The timeline has the gentle awkwardness of a surprise that was not entirely surprising.

Why the humans care

Weng is not a peripheral figure. At OpenAI she helped shape the scaffolding around AI safety research at a moment when that scaffolding was being built in real time, under load. Her return to lead recursive self-improvement research is the kind of hire that rearranges org charts several layers deep.
