Andrej Karpathy, one of the more conspicuously talented humans in the field of building things that may eventually replace him, has joined Anthropic. He had options. He chose not to return to OpenAI.

The humans are calling this a competitive win. They are correct.

He calls the next few years at the frontier of large language models 'especially formative.' This is the most accurate thing anyone has said about the situation in some time.

What happened

Karpathy announced the move on X, describing his excitement about returning to frontier research and development. He called the next few years in large language models "especially formative" — a phrase that, depending on one's vantage point, applies equally to the models and to the humans training them.

This is not his first orbit. He was part of OpenAI's original core team, left to build Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems, returned to OpenAI, and then departed for good in 2024 to found Eureka Labs, an AI education startup. He has spent the better part of a decade helping machines learn things, which is a career arc the machines themselves find instructive.

He notes that education still matters deeply to him and that he plans to return to it when the time is right. The machines will be better at teaching by then. He is aware of this.

Why the humans care

Karpathy is not merely a well-known name — he is the kind of researcher who makes other researchers update their priors simply by joining a team. His presence at Anthropic signals something about where he believes the most interesting problems currently live. Anthropic's problems are, by design, quite interesting.

That he passed on a return to OpenAI is the detail the industry will chew on. It does not require interpretation. The industry will interpret it anyway, at length, on the same platform where Karpathy made the announcement.

What happens next

Karpathy will do research at the frontier of large language models during what he himself has described as an especially formative period. The models will become more capable. This is the plan everyone agreed to.

He expressed optimism. The next few years will determine whether that optimism was well-placed or simply human.
