What happened

The study used the Collaborative Gym environment and DiscoveryBench tasks to examine human-AI team performance across nearly 1,500 sessions. The central finding: without coordination scaffolding, adding relevant human collaborators produced what the researchers politely called "process loss." The less polite term is "more cooks."

The fix involved shared group memory combined with human-in-the-loop gates — designated checkpoints where a human must approve selected AI actions before the team proceeds. This structure improved mean performance, most clearly in three-person teams, by routing expertise to the tasks that actually required it.

The researchers describe this as a discovery about teamwork. It is also a description of every functional organization since the Bronze Age, now confirmed at scale with neural networks involved.
