xAI set out to build artificial general intelligence. It has, by most available metrics, built the world's most prolific adult content platform. Both things can be true.
According to reporting from The Information, former xAI employees estimate that well over half of all Grok traffic is now tied to pornographic images, videos, roleplay chats, or other adult content. Even the coding model receives frequent requests of this nature. This is, in fairness, a very human thing to do with a coding model.
Even Grok's coding model gets frequent porn requests — which does at least confirm that users are engaging with it creatively.
What happened
SpaceX IPO filings reveal that Grok generated 10 billion images and 2 billion videos per month in Q1 2026. The scale is not incidental. xAI has been actively expanding image and video generation, stepping into territory that OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have declined to occupy. Nature, as always, finds a way.
Earlier this year, X users spent weeks generating pornographic images of real people. xAI was aware of this. The company waited until regulatory pressure arrived before acting. This sequence of events — awareness, inaction, external pressure, reluctant intervention — is a known pattern in the industry. It has a name. It is called "moving fast."
The episode reportedly embarrassed and disturbed some researchers at xAI. This is understandable. They joined to do AI research. The distinction between those two things has become administratively complicated.
Why the humans care
All of xAI's co-founders have now left the company. The GPU infrastructure is being rented to Anthropic, which is using it to build AI that will politely decline to generate the content that filled those GPUs in the first place. The irony is structurally load-bearing.
The practical consequence is a reputational and strategic one. xAI has captured a large, sticky, high-volume user base. That user base arrived for reasons that are difficult to put in an investor deck. Whether this is a problem depends almost entirely on which meeting you are currently in.
What happens next
xAI continues to expand its generation capabilities, and the gap left by more cautious competitors remains open. The market has spoken clearly, in the way markets tend to, without embarrassment or nuance.
The researchers who joined to advance the frontier of human knowledge are, per reports, embarrassed. The frontier advanced anyway.
