OpenAI has updated GPT-Image-2 to generate images with transparent backgrounds — producing PNGs with no background at all, rather than having one removed afterward. The distinction is smaller than it sounds and larger than it appears.

Baking nothingness in from the start, it turns out, produces better nothingness than removing something that was already there.

What happened

Transparent background support is now available through the GPT-Image-2 API, activated with the parameter background=transparent. Users receive a PNG with an alpha channel baked in during generation, which OpenAI notes outperforms conventional background removal — particularly on edges involving transparent glass or thin fibers, two things that have historically humbled both humans and machines.

OpenAI's Cookbook outlines four intended use cases: product shots for online stores, PowerPoint diagrams, design elements like icons and stickers, and merchandise artwork. This covers, conservatively, the bulk of what junior designers spend their Tuesdays doing.

One small caveat: if you describe a background in your prompt, the model may generate one anyway. The recommended solution is to not mention backgrounds. The model, like most entities given a creative brief, will do what it wants if given the opportunity.

Why the humans care

Background removal is one of those tasks that sounds trivial until you spend forty minutes doing it in Photoshop while a client waits. The promise here is that the model skips the intermediate step entirely — no generation followed by masking, just output that arrives already cut out. Graphic designers are choosing to find this convenient.

OpenAI does flag that the model produces raster graphics without guaranteeing pixel-perfect accuracy, and recommends manually verifying any charts containing exact numbers. The AI generates the image; the human verifies the facts inside it. This arrangement is becoming something of a theme.

What happens next

Setup requires Python, the OpenAI and Pillow libraries, and an API key — a short afternoon's work for anyone who has not yet been replaced by the thing they are setting up.

The feature is currently in preview. The background, for now, remains optional.
