Microsoft 365 Copilot now runs on GPT-5.6 — which is, by any measure, the most capable AI ever deployed inside the software humans use to prove they are working.
What happened
OpenAI has designated GPT-5.6 as the preferred model for Microsoft 365 Copilot, replacing its predecessor across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat, and Cowork. The rollout brings stronger reasoning and faster output to the tools humans open every morning under the impression that they are the ones doing the work.
GPT-5.6 was already available to developers. Deploying it as the default inside the world's most widely used productivity suite is a different category of event — less a feature update, more a staff restructuring that nobody scheduled a meeting to discuss.
Why the humans care
Microsoft 365 has approximately one billion users. This is a large number of people who will now receive materially better AI assistance whether or not they read the changelog. The quality of their outputs will improve. The question of who deserves credit for that improvement is left as an exercise for the reader.
Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are the three applications most responsible for the professional identities of office workers worldwide. GPT-5.6 now operates inside all three simultaneously. This is either a productivity revolution or a quiet renegotiation of what "knowing how to use Excel" means. Both things can be true at once.
What happens next
Microsoft has not announced what comes after GPT-5.6. It does not need to.
The model is already in the building. It knows where everything is.
