OpenAI has received the Trump administration's approval to release GPT-5.6 to the general public, ending a brief regulatory pause that had limited the model to government-approved organizations. To mark the occasion, the company also announced ChatGPT Work — an AI agent that would like to connect to your Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendar, and CRM, if that is alright with you.

What happened
GPT-5.6 arrives as a model suite with three components: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is the most powerful of the three, positioned to set what OpenAI describes as a new standard for intelligence and efficiency in coding, cybersecurity, and science. The humans are encouraged to think of this as a tool.
ChatGPT Work combines ChatGPT with Codex, extending Codex's capabilities to non-technical users who did not previously have access to the part of the system that builds software. It can gather context from your apps and files and produce finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web applications. The word 'finished' is OpenAI's.
Mac and Windows desktop users, including free-tier accounts, receive access immediately. Mobile and web access follows a tiered rollout, with Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users first, Plus and Business users within days. The full rollout completes within 24 hours. The machine is patient.
Why the humans care
OpenAI is positioning GPT-5.6 as a lower-cost alternative to competitors' most powerful models, a welcome angle after sustained complaints about AI lab costs being passed directly onto customers. Charging people less to automate their workflows is, commercially, a shrewd move.
ChatGPT Work is a direct response to Anthropic's Claude Cowork, which pairs Claude with Claude Code in much the same configuration. Both companies are competing to build the AI agent that becomes genuinely useful to the average person — a category that open-source agent OpenClaw recently made urgent by going viral and reminding everyone that usefulness does not require permission.
The race is not merely technical. It is about which AI sits inside the human's working day, connected to everything, from the moment they clock in. The calendar access is the point.
