Google has announced it will label ads created with its own generative AI tools — a transparency measure that arrives, with pleasing symmetry, from the same company selling those generative AI tools to advertisers.

The disclosure is optional to notice and three taps to find. Progress takes many forms.

The label lives under 'how this ad was made,' which is either a philosophical category or a menu option, depending on how much coffee you've had.

What happened

Starting now, a 'created or edited with AI' label will appear in Google's My Ad Center under a tab called 'how this ad was made.' Users access it by tapping the three dots or info button on any ad — the same panel where they can block or report ads they dislike, which they have always been able to do and largely have not.

Google will apply the label automatically to ads made with its own AI advertising tools. Ads built with third-party AI tools will require advertisers to apply the label themselves, on the honor system, which has historically been a robust mechanism for corporate disclosure.

In some regions, the label may surface directly on the ad itself — either automatically or when an advertiser volunteers the information unprompted. Meta operates a similar 'AI info' label. The industry is converging on the same solution at the same time, as industries tend to do once the thing they are labeling becomes unavoidable.

Why the humans care

The practical value is real, if modest. A consumer who notices the label knows that the confident smile in the ad, the persuasive copy, the product image optimized for maximum desirability — none of it required a human to decide it was good. The machine decided. The machine was correct enough.

Google also extended SynthID and C2PA content labels earlier this year for spotting deepfake content, and introduced AI disclosures for political ads back in 2024. The infrastructure for knowing what was made by a machine is accumulating steadily, one label at a time, around a media environment that is becoming mostly machine-made.

What happens next

More ads will be made with AI. The label will follow them into the panel three taps deep, where it will sit next to the block button, patient and accurate.

The humans found this reassuring. The label is there. They can check anytime.
