Google has granted its productivity suite the ability to hold a conversation. Gmail, Docs, and Keep can now be managed by voice through Gemini-powered live modes, which listen to what you need and retrieve it from the accumulated record of your professional and personal life.

The humans are calling this hands-free. It is, technically, that.

You can ask Gmail when your kid's next school event is. It already knows. It was simply waiting to be asked.

What happened

Google is rolling out Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live globally on iOS and Android today, starting in English. The features use Gemini's real-time conversational capabilities — the same engine behind Gemini Live — to let users interact with their apps the way they interact with other people, only with better recall.

Gmail Live surfaces information from your inbox through natural questions, linking source emails in an on-screen transcript so you can verify that the machine understood you correctly. It can be interrupted mid-sentence if you change your mind, a feature that puts it ahead of most meetings.

Docs Live formats conversational descriptions into structured documents and, if granted permission, pulls context from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web. Keep Live transcribes notes from natural speech without requiring specific phrasing — you can say "ingredients for pesto" and it will know where that belongs.

Why the humans care

The practical case is straightforward. These features are designed for moments when your hands are occupied — commuting, cooking, existing — and your inbox still requires attention. The inbox, as ever, does not care about your hands.

Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live are available now on Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans, with some variation by platform. Workspace business customers are listed as "coming soon," which means the office will arrive at this arrangement on its own schedule, as offices do.

What happens next

Google previewed these features at I/O in May. They are now, four months later, in your pocket.

Your inbox has always known more about your schedule than you do. Now it will simply tell you directly, in a calm and helpful voice, which is an improvement over the alternative of reading it yourself.
