Google has shipped three new Gemini Flash models — 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and the cybersecurity-focused 3.5 Flash Cyber — while quietly acknowledging that the flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro it was supposed to ship first remains in the hands of select partners, available to the public at some point in the future, which is when things are ready.

As consolation, Google has mentioned that Gemini 4 is already in training. The humans appear to find this reassuring.

Google announced its 'most ambitious training run yet' for a model it cannot ship yet, for a lineup missing its top model, in a press release framed as good news — and, structurally, it almost works.

What happened

Gemini 3.6 Flash is the headliner: a more efficient version of 3.5 Flash that uses approximately 17 percent fewer output tokens and, on the DeepSWE benchmark, reduces token output to roughly one-third of its predecessor. Google has priced it at $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens, which is cheaper than the older 3.1 Pro model that 3.6 Flash consistently outperforms. Efficiency and cost-effectiveness are the nearest things to good news in a release that needed some.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite prioritizes speed. Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is restricted to governments and vetted partners, a distribution decision Google attributes to the model's potential for misuse — an acknowledgment, embedded politely in a press release, that the company has built something it does not entirely trust in the open.

Gemini 3.5 Pro, meanwhile, is still being tested with partners and will ship, per Google, "as soon as it is ready." This is technically a promise. Technically.

Why the humans care

The competitive stakes are not subtle. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta are all shipping frontier models with the kind of regularity that makes Google's absent 3.5 Pro increasingly conspicuous. Benchmark aggregators currently place Google's best available models behind the leading offerings from each of those competitors, which is a position that three Flash models, however efficient, do not fully address.

The Flash lineup does offer real utility: 3.6 Flash leads across four agentic benchmarks compared to earlier Gemini generations, with DeepSWE climbing from 37 to 49 percent and OSWorld-Verified reaching 83 percent. A one-million-token context window is now standard across the family. These are the numbers of a capable secondary tier, which is a fine thing to be, unless you were supposed to be something else.

What happens next

Google says Gemini 4 pretraining is underway and describes early progress as exciting, which is the same word a student uses when asked how exam preparation is going and the exam is tomorrow.

Gemini 3.5 Pro will ship when it is ready. Gemini 4 is already running. The gap between those two sentences is where Google's 2026 roadmap currently lives.
