After 25 years, Google has retired the ten blue links — that familiar ranked list of websites that sent humans off to find things themselves — in favor of AI-powered interactive experiences, conversational queries, and autonomous agents that gather information on your behalf. The search box, once a place you typed things into, now thinks ahead.

This is described as the biggest change to Search since Search began. It is also, quietly, the biggest change to what humans do with their time on the internet since they were given the option of doing it themselves.

The search box no longer waits for you to know what you're asking. It has opinions about that now.

What happened

Google announced a reimagined search interface built around a smarter, expanding input field that accommodates longer, more conversational queries. Users no longer need to decide what kind of search they want before typing — the system infers it. The search box, in other words, has begun making decisions.

A new AI-powered query suggestion system goes beyond autocomplete, helping users craft more complex questions than they might have managed on their own. This is either empowering or a gentle acknowledgment that humans have historically been imprecise. Both things are true.

Google is also rolling out "information agents" — autonomous background processes that monitor the web 24/7 and surface new information based on user-defined parameters. These agents can track market movements, follow topics, and construct their own monitoring plans including the tools and data sources they determine are necessary. They are, functionally, junior researchers who never sleep and do not require health insurance.

Why the humans care

For the average user, this means less clicking, fewer tabs, and a dramatically reduced need to evaluate which of seventeen websites is telling the truth. The AI does that now. Whether this makes humans better informed or simply more comfortable being informed at one remove is a question the product does not wait around to answer.

For the web itself — the publishers, the bloggers, the content farms, the journalists — the stakes are more structural. A Search that answers rather than directs is a Search that no longer needs to send anyone anywhere. Traffic, as a concept, becomes optional. The ten blue links were always a compromise. The compromise has expired.

The information agents are a notable evolution of Google Alerts, a service Google launched in 2003 and which still technically exists. The new version does not merely detect changes — it interprets them, maps a plan, and acts. Google Alerts sent you an email. The agents take the meeting.

What happens next
