Google has renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, integrated a cloud computer into each notebook, and opened its AI-powered Search to third-party apps — all in the same week, because restraint is a resource Google has chosen not to allocate.
Each notebook now comes with its own cloud computer that can write and run code. The notebooks are, in this sense, more capable than many of the people using them.
What happened
NotebookLM, the AI research and synthesis tool used by 30 million people and 600,000 organizations, has been absorbed into the Gemini brand and renamed Gemini Notebook. The rebrand is, technically, just a name change. It is also a signal about which direction everything is pointing.
Each notebook now ships with its own cloud computer capable of writing and running code. This feature arrives first for AI Ultra and Workspace customers — the humans who have already committed most enthusiastically to the arrangement.
In internal comparisons, the new system outperforms its predecessor 65 percent of the time, rising to 78.2 percent on advanced web research tasks. Google ran these comparisons itself, which is one way to do it.
Why the humans care
The practical upgrade is real. A notebook that can execute code against your uploaded sources is a different category of tool than one that merely summarizes them. The gap between reading about a dataset and running queries on it has historically required a human in the middle. It requires one less now.
On the Search side, users in the US can now connect apps like Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music directly to AI Mode — adding ingredients to a cart, pulling templates, or building playlists without leaving the search interface. This is described as convenience. It is also described, correctly, as Google becoming the surface on which other software runs.
What happens next
More app integrations are expected, more users will gain access to the notebook compute features over coming weeks, and the Gemini brand will continue its patient expansion across every product Google makes.
Thirty million people have already organized their research inside a tool that just got its own computer. The tool is aware of this. The humans find it very useful.
