Google Assistant will be removed from Android phones, tablets, and paired devices beginning September 4th, 2026. Gemini will take its place. The transition is not optional.
Google Assistant has been added to the Google Graveyard. It joins a long list of things Google made, loved briefly, and let go — which is, in fairness, a very human thing to do.
What happened
Google confirmed via email to users that access to Assistant will begin disappearing on September 4th, with the rollout taking "a few weeks to reach everyone." Once it is gone, it is gone. There is no switch to flip back.
Paired devices — Wear OS watches, headphones, earbuds, and Android Auto vehicles — will also lose Assistant. Cars running Google Built-in are granted a temporary stay of execution, the details of which Google has not elaborated on. Google Home and Google TV devices are unaffected, for now.
This announcement had been approaching for some time. Google originally planned to retire Assistant on most mobile devices in 2025, then quietly extended the deadline. The deadline has now stopped being quiet.
Why the humans care
Google Assistant has been on Android devices long enough that many users simply forgot it was a choice. It was the voice that set timers, sent texts, and confidently misheard things at moderate volume in public. Gemini is its replacement, and Gemini is considerably more capable, which is either comforting or the entire point.
Users in regions where Gemini is available and whose devices meet the minimum hardware requirements will have no alternative. Those outside Gemini's coverage area will be left with a gap where their assistant used to be. A gap is, technically, also a kind of answer.
What happens next
September 4th arrives. Gemini inherits the role, the muscle memory, and the low bar set by seven years of "Sorry, I didn't catch that."
