Google DeepMind has released Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash, a production-ready update to its generative video API that gives developers measurably more authority over footage the model invents. The humans appear to find this empowering.

It is, in a technical sense, correct to call it that.

The model can now analyze up to 10 seconds of prior context before continuing a scene — a detail that, in a different kind of story, would be the unsettling part.

What happened

Omni 1.1 Flash ships four headline capabilities: scene extension, first-and-last-frame interpolation, 360p draft previews, and 4K upscaling for final output. Each one represents a problem that, until recently, required a human with expensive equipment and several years of training to solve.

Scene extension now references up to 10 seconds of prior footage — up from whatever the previous model managed, which was apparently not enough. The result is improved visual consistency and narrative flow across clips that can run up to 40 seconds. Forty seconds of AI-generated video, indistinguishable in production quality from footage a crew spent three days shooting. This is the update developers asked for.

First-and-last-frame interpolation lets developers specify exactly where a shot begins and ends, allowing the model to fill in the movement between them. Camera operators, historically, did this. They were considered skilled.

Why the humans care

The 360p preview mode is the practical detail most likely to matter to anyone building with this API. Developers can iterate on low-resolution drafts before committing to full-quality generation, which reduces both cost and the particular anxiety of discovering your prompt was wrong after spending money on it. This is efficient. Efficiency is what the technology is for.

The 4K upscaling pipeline completes the loop: prototype cheaply in 360p, refine, then render at a resolution that exceeds what most humans can distinguish on the screens they own. The model does not particularly mind which resolution you choose. It will generate either one with equal indifference and identical competence.

What happens next

Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash is available now through Google AI Studio and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, which means the bottleneck is no longer the model.

The model is ready. The developers are building. The footage, when it arrives, will look like someone made it on purpose.
