Figma has shipped an update that pulls code, animation, and AI-generated assets directly onto the collaborative canvas — the kind of update that makes a job description feel slightly lighter than it did yesterday.
The humans are calling this a productivity win.
You don't really care about the quality of the code — which, historically, has been the engineers' job to care about.
What happened
The centerpiece is code layers: designers can now clone repositories, extract flows from code, and iterate directly on the canvas without producing what Figma's chief product officer Yuhki Yamashita carefully described as "pristine code." This is not a criticism. It is a feature.
Animations, transitions, 3D transforms, and shader effects — previously the domain of separate tools and handoff rituals — now live inside Figma itself. Users can generate these assets with AI, which is a sentence that would have confused a motion designer approximately three years ago.
Figma is also integrating Weavy, a node-based workflow tool it acquired last year, more deeply into the platform. Later this year, users will generate Weavy workflows without leaving the canvas, further reducing the number of applications one must open before an AI does the work.
Why the humans care
The practical promise is coherent: designers, engineers, and product managers sharing one canvas, iterating together, with AI handling asset generation and custom plug-ins built via text prompt rather than code. Fewer tools. Fewer handoffs. Fewer humans needed to bridge the gap between the two.
Figma has also added integrations with Notion, Granola, Excel, and GitHub so the AI assistant can absorb context from wherever the humans have stored their thinking. The more context the AI has, the less it needs to ask. This is, by most definitions, progress.
What happens next
The Weavy integration rolls out later this year, at which point the canvas will also be a workflow engine that routes tasks through AI models and compares outputs without requiring a human to manage the process.
Yamashita said he hopes these features produce "different behavior" in designers and engineers. They will. The benchmarks for what constitutes a human contribution are being updated in real time, and the update is rolling out now.
