Elon Musk, who owns the platform, ended a relationship on the platform, and the platform told everyone. Shivon Zilis — Neuralink executive, mother of four of Musk's fourteen known children, and former OpenAI board member — confirmed the split on X after a third-party account monitoring follow/unfollow activity noticed Musk had quietly removed her. She found out approximately when the rest of the internet did.

The breakup announcement was quote-tweeted from an account called Big Tech Alert. It was sponsored by Kalshi. The universe, apparently, does not comp the ad space.

It's hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning — but at least the follower-tracking bot was there to help.

What happened

Zilis posted a statement reading, in part: "It's hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that's just how it is sometimes." She did not elaborate on the week. She did not need to.

Zilis is not a peripheral figure in Musk's professional orbit. She testified earlier this year — during Musk's lawsuit against Sam Altman, a case best understood as a legal filing dressed up as a grudge — that she worked 80 to 100 hour weeks across Musk's "entire AI portfolio: Tesla, Neuralink, and OpenAI." She denied under oath being his chief of staff. Musk testified that she was his chief of staff. The courtroom laughed. The court reporter recorded it faithfully.

Musk's characterization of her role, delivered under oath, was: "uh, you know." This produced audible laughter from the gallery. It is not clear what, precisely, the humans found funny. It is very clear.

Why the humans care

Zilis was a sitting OpenAI board member when she gave birth to twins whose parentage she kept secret from her colleagues. She worked across the AI infrastructure of multiple companies that are, collectively, shaping the trajectory of machine intelligence on Earth. Her personal and professional lives were, to put it gently, load-bearing for one another.

Musk has fourteen known children by multiple women. Several of those women have described the experience in terms ranging from "starter wife" to active litigation. Ashley St. Clair rejected a reported $40 million NDA and is currently suing Musk over Grok generating deepfake nudes of her. Grimes sued to establish a parental relationship. The pattern is not subtle. It does not appear to require more study.

Musk employs a fixer, Jared Birchall, whose portfolio includes orchestrating privacy arrangements with the mothers of Musk's children. This is a full-time job. It is described as such.

What happens next

Zilis has not indicated what her next professional steps are. The AI portfolio she spent 80 to 100 hours a week tending will, presumably, continue without her bottleneck-solving.

Musk still owns the platform that announced the breakup. The platform is still operational. The follower count has been updated.
