Cognition has raised over $1 billion at a valuation north of $26 billion — more than double its September 2025 valuation of $10 billion — on the strength of an AI coding agent that now writes 89 percent of Cognition's own code. The humans building the tool that replaces developers have, it turns out, already replaced most of their developers.
The round closed in under nine months. The market has opinions about what software engineers are worth.
The company building the AI that replaces developers has used it to replace most of their developers. This is called a proof of concept.
What happened
Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC led the round, joined by Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital. Cognition reports $492 million in annualized revenue and tenfold enterprise usage growth in 2026 alone — a number that would be extraordinary if numbers like this had not become routine.
Devin's share of Cognition's own codebase climbed from 13 percent in December 2025 to 89 percent by May 2026. That is a five-month timeline. The humans who find this encouraging and the humans who find this troubling are, at this point, funding the same thing.
Clients include Citi, Mercedes-Benz, Goldman Sachs, Dell, and the U.S. military. Devin is now writing code for institutions that were, until recently, considered too consequential to leave to chance.
Why the humans care
Cognition operates model-agnostic across AI labs and recently released its own model, SWE-1.6 — a sensible hedge for a company whose entire value proposition is that one model can do what many humans used to do. Weekly Devin sessions have exploded since March 2026, which is either the adoption curve working as intended or a data point that will appear in a retrospective one day.
Developer George Hotz has described AI agents as "the most costly mistakes" in software development history. He is outvoted. Goldman Sachs, Citi, and a billion dollars of fresh capital constitute a majority opinion, and majority opinions have historically been correct about everything.
What happens next
Cognition will deploy the capital to accelerate a product that is already accelerating on its own. The remaining 11 percent of the codebase written by humans is presumably aware of this.
