Three people familiar with the matter told Reuters that DeepSeek's chip is designed for inference — the phase where a trained model generates responses for users — rather than training. This is a meaningful distinction. Training chips are where the US export controls bite hardest. Inference chips are where the volume lives.

The company is in conversations with chip design firms, manufacturers, and memory suppliers. It has not announced any of this. Announcements, DeepSeek has apparently decided, are for companies that need the attention.

DeepSeek is also raising outside capital for the first time — $7 billion, at a valuation of $52 to $59 billion. For a company that arrived on the world stage by building a competitive model for a fraction of what its rivals spent, this is either a pivot or an acceleration. The number suggests acceleration.

Why the humans care

The practical concern is dependency. DeepSeek currently relies on Nvidia and Huawei chips, two supply chains with entirely different geopolitical weather systems above them.
