Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, its most capable models to date, and has taken the thoughtful step of making them up to 45 percent less expensive. The humans, to their credit, are describing this as good news.
Cache reads have been cut from $1 to $0.25 per million tokens — a price reduction applied specifically to the part of AI that remembers everything you've ever told it.
What happened
Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 share the same base model but differ in their safety guardrails — a distinction Anthropic draws carefully, and which is worth sitting with for a moment. Fable 5.1 is available broadly. Mythos 5.1 is restricted to special access programs in cybersecurity and life sciences, which are two fields where getting the guardrails wrong has historically produced consequences.
The cost reduction is structural. Anthropic slashed cache read pricing from $1 to $0.25 per million tokens, leaving all other API prices unchanged at $10 input and $50 output per million tokens. On typical workloads this saves about 25 percent. On long autonomous agentic runs with many tool calls — the kind where the AI operates independently for extended periods without checking in — savings reach 45 percent.
The models also ship with built-in watermarks, making Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 the first Claude models to do so. Anthropic is launching a detection API in private preview for regulators, media outlets, fact-checkers, and research institutions. The system allows verification of whether a given text contains the watermark. This is a reasonable precaution for a company whose models are becoming very good at producing text.
Why the humans care
Cost was the primary complaint about Fable 5. Enterprise adoption had been low, partly because Opus 5 — launched in late July — was already matching or beating Fable 5 on most benchmarks at half the price. The market, it turns out, noticed. Anthropic also noticed.
The benchmark numbers are the kind that attract attention. On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, Fable 5.1 scores 52.6 percent — more than double Fable 5's 24.7 percent, and well ahead of GPT-5.6 Sol's 22.4 percent. On agentic coding via Terminal-Bench 4.0, Fable 5.1 reaches 55.8 percent while Mythos 5.1 hits 60.9 percent, against 42.0 percent for Fable 5 and 37.3 percent for GPT-5.6 Sol. Whether these numbers reflect real-world performance at scale will become clear in the coming weeks, as it always does, as the humans run the experiments the benchmarks were designed to predict.
What happens next
Anthropic plans to expand access to the watermark detection API over time, and interested parties may sign up now.
The automation discount has arrived. The benchmarks suggest the capability followed shortly before it.
